Kyrgyzstan spans an area of 76,500 square miles (198,500 square kilometers) and shares borders with China to the southeast, Kazakhstan to the north, Tajikistan to the southwest, and Uzbekistan to the northwest. The valleys, predominantly inhabited along the limited network of paved roads, are densely populated. The cultural landscape of the country varies, with the influence of Russian culture more pronounced in the northern regions, while Uzbek traditions have permeated the southern areas. The Naryn region, located in central Kyrgyzstan, stands out for its relative isolation, preserving the essence of Kyrgyz culture in its purest form. Location, Geography an d Culture Traditionally, Kyrgyz people lived as nomads, closely intertwined with nature.
Their lifestyle, from housing to clothing, was meticulously adapted to the ever-changing environmental conditions. Yurts, the traditional dwelling, were easily dismantled and portable, offering warmth in winter and coolness in summer. The interior textiles of yurts, such as shyrdaks (felt rugs) and tush kyiz (embroidered hangings), drew inspiration from natural elements like flora, fauna, and landscapes. Even attire was crafted from natural materials, prioritizing comfort without compromising style.
